To help ease acute, chronic or postoperative pain, we may use a device called the Alpha-Stim unit with patients. The Alpha-Stim transmits tiny electric microcurrents through easily applied adhesive electrode patches or through external probes placed on specific part of the body, often acupuncture points. Hence, Alpha-Stim can be used as needle-less acupuncture.
Microcurrent stimulation is based on the concept that each cell in the body has an electrical potential across its cell membrane. The Alpha-Stim unit produces a wave-form that moves electrons through the body and brain at a variety of frequencies. It is said that this "harmonic resonance" closely resembles the activity of the nervous system and brain in a normal EEG.
Following several sessions of Alpha-Stim treatment, patients have reported a significant reduction in their acute or long-standing pain.
Treating Anxiety, Depression and Insomnia with Cranial Electrotherapy
Some patients receiving Alpha-Stim treatment have reported improvement in their anxiety, depression and /or insomnia through cranial electrotherapy stimulation. The treatment is simple - we apply the current via easy- to-use clip electrodes that attach to the ear lobes.
Generally used for 20-30 minutes every other day for a few weeks, or as needed, patients have reported a pleasant, relaxed feeling of well-being with improved symptoms.
Patients seem to tolerate the procedure with few side effects. We sometimes use it in conjunction with traditional medical treatments. We may use Alpha-Stim with acupuncture needles, or by itself. It may help patients reduce the need for prescription drugs that can have unpleasant side effects.
